Overview

The village and its ski area

Alpe d'Huez is in Isère, France, and its ski area, the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine, has 160.2 km of mapped classified downhill runs served by 82 lifts. The mapped ski area runs from 1124 m at its lowest point to 3314 m at its highest. Those are ski-area figures, not the altitude of the village itself, so don't use them as a guide to where you'll be staying.

For a family trip, the run mix is worth a look. Beginner terrain makes up 55.52% of the mapped classified downhill runs, which is more than half the area. Ski-in/ski-out accommodation is available, for example at the Grandes Rousses Hotel, which offers ski-in/ski-out access. That covers selected accommodation only, and snow conditions and lift operation will still decide how easy it is in practice.

The published 2026/27 operating season runs from 5 December 2026 to 25 April 2027. On cost, our planning estimate puts a February half-term week in the mid price tier. It is based on a median of about EUR 113.93 per person per night for a family of four (two adults and children aged 6 and 10) in a 3 to 4-star apartment for seven nights from 13 February 2027. That figure sits just below the premium line, and the week is also a French school-holiday week. Treat it as a planning tier, not a quote. Lift passes, rental and ski school are priced separately. An adult one-day pass costs EUR 68 in the 2026/27 high season, which runs from 19 December 2026 to 9 April 2027. That price applies to ages 13 to 64.

Family fit

How it suits a family

For the youngest children, ESF Alpe d'Huez runs the Chalet des Enfants in Les Bergers. It offers supervised ski and play programmes for ages 2.5 to 4, plus afternoon care from 2.5. It opens on Saturday 12 December 2026. It closes only for the week of 21 to 26 March 2027, which is Tomorrowland festival week, although private lessons stay available that week. You need to reserve the package. Separately, the Les Intrépides nursery accepts visiting children aged 6 months to 4 years. Reservations are compulsory, and health and guardian documentation is required. It runs daily from 12 December 2026 to 25 April 2027. Confirm session hours and capacity before you rely on it.

For an English-speaking ski school, the tourist office lists English at Easyski, which teaches from age 3 and is listed as open daily from 5 December 2026 to 25 April 2027. Confirm the instructor and course language when you book. On lift passes, a free pass is listed for children who are under 5 on 5 December 2026, the official season start. You will need a personal pass card, a recent photo and proof of age, and under-fives do not count towards the family offer. Confirm the conditions before you travel. For non-skiing time, Agor'Alp leisure activities are available with separate access charges. They are unsupervised, so check hours and reservations.

On UK school holidays, Christmas, February half-term and Easter all fall within the published 2026/27 season of 5 December 2026 to 25 April 2027. For Easter, the family area and its lifts need to run through Friday 16 April 2027, the last day of the latest UK Easter school holidays. ESF gives its winter season as 5 December 2026 to 24 April 2027. Check your own school calendar, live lift status and care dates, as snow is never guaranteed.
