Overview

The village and its ski area

Auron is the resort village of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France, at about 1,600 m. This guide covers Auron itself. Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée village, at 1,140 m and 7 km away, is a separate place. It reaches the ski area by the Pinatelle gondola, and it is not covered here.

The ski area has 61.6 km of mapped classified downhill runs served by 20 lifts. Its mapped altitude runs from 1597 m at the lowest point to 2445 m at the highest. Those are ski-area figures, not the village's own altitude. Beginner terrain makes up 54.83% of the mapped classified runs, which is useful if your children are still learning.

For the 2026/27 season the published operating dates are 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, and opening is subject to snow. On price, we place Auron in a mid planning tier. An adult aged 26 to 61 pays EUR 44 for a one-day pass in both high and low season. High season is 19 December 2026 to 2 January 2027 and 6 February to 6 March 2027. A child aged 5 to 11 pays EUR 33.70 a day. Lodging, travel, meals and your holiday week can move a real trip into a different tier, so treat this as a planning guide and not a quote.

Family fit

How it suits a family

The ski school is ESF Auron. The tourist office listing gives English as a spoken language, but the school's own website is in French and names no teaching language, so an English-speaking group is not guaranteed. Its Club Enfants takes children aged 3 to under 6 in level-based groups. The morning session runs 09:00 to 13:00 with the lesson from 10:00 to 12:00. The afternoon session runs 14:00 to 17:00 with the lesson from 15:00 to 17:00. Children have play activities indoors or outdoors in a secure area before and after the lesson. Courses run from 4 pupils, and parents may join during the care time. Weekend and 5- or 6-day formats are offered. A full-day Formule Petits Skieurs (09:00 to 17:00) runs on booking, and the February-only Prestige Piou Piou groups take at most about 4 children per instructor. A week of mornings starts from EUR 240, though that price is undated. The school's Jardin des Neiges has three conveyor lifts reserved for the ESF and a heated chalet.

For younger children, Les Marmottes is the municipal crèche in Auron, with its entrance at the Riou car park. It takes children from 3 months to 3 years. The tourist office lists it as open 09:00 to 17:00 from 14 December 2026 to 14 April 2027, although the resort's own page says 08:30 to 17:00. Booking by email is required, for up to six consecutive days at a time, and the fee follows the French family-quotient scale. Les Oursons, on the Chastellarès plateau, takes children aged 4 to 10 from 09:00 to 17:00 at weekends and in French zone B school holidays. It also needs email booking, for up to five consecutive days. A free lift pass is listed for children under 5 with proof of age, but the reusable support (EUR 2) and optional insurance are excluded. Confirm the conditions before you travel.

Off the slopes, Auron has a swimming pool with a children's pool, open daily except Tuesday, and an ice rink on the Place Centrale. The pool and rink pages still show 2025/26 dates, so check 2026/27 opening. There is a free, secured sledge run on the Chastellarès plateau and free tube sledging from age 12, or from 6 with an adult. About 9 km of marked snowshoe trails run on two circuits. Dog-sled rides start from age 3 at the top of the Blainon chairlift.

Christmas and the February half-term both fall within the published season. The lift tariff treats 6 February to 6 March 2027 as high season, and the half-term planning weeks start on 8, 15 and 22 February. Easter is not marked as suitable. No 2026/27 end date is published for the family area, and the Club Enfants has no published end date either. The crèche is listed only to 14 April 2027, so an earlier Easter stay may work. Check the school calendar, live lift status and care dates.

  2. 2Children’s club22 Oct 2026

ESF Auron's Club Enfants takes children aged 3 to under 6 in level-based groups: a morning session 09:00–13:00 with the lesson 10:00–12:00, or an afternoon session 14:00–17:00 with the lesson 15:00–17:00, with play activities indoors or outdoors in a secure area before and after the lesson; courses run from 4 pupils and parents may join during the care time. Weekend and 5- or 6-day formats are offered; the February-only Prestige Piou Piou groups take at most about 4 children per instructor, and a full-day 'Formule Petits Skieurs' (09:00–17:00) runs on booking. The school's Jardin des Neiges has three conveyor lifts reserved for the ESF and a heated chalet. Prices are undated (a week of mornings from EUR 240). Counted as a kids club because these are children-only ski-school groups (Zauchensee precedent); the tourist office also lists a children's club for the school.

  3. 3Free child lift pass22 Oct 2026

The lift operator's page says the pass is free for children under 5 with proof of age, excluding the mandatory reusable support (EUR 2) and optional insurance. That page is undated, but the tourist office's listing for 5 December 2026–18 April 2027 repeats free skiing under 5, the 2026/2027 stay tariff starts the paid child band at 5 (5–11), and the 2026/2027 season-pass page gives under-5s a free season pass with a EUR 30 file fee.

  4. 4English-speaking ski school22 Oct 2026

The Nice Côte d'Azur tourist office's listing for ESF Auron (Place Centrale, Immeuble La Ruade) gives English as the language spoken, and the regional tourism board's listing, updated by that office on 8 July 2026, shows English under spoken languages (Alpe d'Huez precedent). The school's own French-only site names no teaching language; an English-speaking group is not guaranteed.

  5. 5Ski-in / ski-out22 Oct 2026

Original access assessment: no property claims ski-in/ski-out on an official page. The tourist office's listing for Monde des Neiges, a Gîtes de France two-room flat in the centre of the resort, places it at the foot of the Auron slopes, directly opposite the Riou drag lift, with shops, pool and ice rink about two minutes away on foot. Applies to the Auron resort centre by the Riou lift; Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée village (1,140 m) lies 7 km away and reaches the ski area by the Pinatelle gondola.

  6. 6Daycare22 Oct 2026

Les Marmottes, the municipal crèche in Auron (entrance at the Riou car park), takes children from 3 months to 3 years every day 09:00–17:00 from 14 December 2026 to 14 April 2027 according to the tourist office listing (the resort's own page says 08:30–17:00, seven days a week in winter); booking by email is required, for up to six consecutive days at a time, and the fee follows the French family-quotient (CAF) scale. Les Oursons, a seasonal care service on the Chastellarès plateau in Auron, takes children aged 4–10 from 09:00 to 17:00 at weekends and in French zone B school holidays (booking by email, up to five consecutive days; undated). Neither page limits places to residents or gives visitor prices.

  7. 7Non-skier activities22 Oct 2026

On the resort's official site, all in Auron: the Piscine d'Auron has a leisure pool with a children's pool and a balneo area, open daily except Tuesday (the page still shows 2025/26 dates, 20 December 2025 to the resort's closing on 19 April 2026); the Patinoire d'Auron on the Place Centrale opens daily (2025/26 page, from 20 December 2025); a free, secured sledge run on the Chastellarès plateau by the free car park; free tube sledging on the same sledge park as part of the resort's activity programme (from age 12, or 6 with an adult); about 9 km of marked snowshoe trails on two circuits from the resort; the Chalet d'Auron spa, open to day visitors from EUR 40 a person, with a covered heated pool (weekends and school holidays), sauna, hammam and jacuzzi; and 45-minute dog-sled rides from age 3 at the top of the Blainon chairlift (pedestrian ride EUR 5). Undated unless stated.

  8. 8Price tier22 Oct 2026

Mid planning tier. Basis (owner decision 2026-10-22): official dated ski prices only; no lodging price was sampled. The batch rule compares the dated adult peak day pass with the EUR 69 premium-season day pass behind the existing mid tier for Jerzens (Hochzeiger), using the matcher's tier factors: at or below 0.8 times is budget only when dated school or childcare prices agree, at or above 1.3 times is premium, otherwise mid; luxury needs lodging evidence. The Auron 2026/2027 stay tariff charges an adult (26–61) EUR 44 for a day in both high and low season (high season 19 December 2026–2 January 2027 and 6 February–6 March 2027) and EUR 217 for six days in high season, about 0.64 times the reference; a child (5–11) pays EUR 33.70 a day. Mid is kept because no dated 2026/27 school or childcare price confirms a low-cost reading: the ESF Club Enfants prices (a week of mornings from EUR 240) are undated, and the Les Marmottes crèche charges on the French family-quotient scale. Accommodation, holiday week, travel and meals can move a real trip into another tier; this is a planning tier, not a quote.

  12. 12Easter23 Oct 2026

Published 2026/27 operations: lifts 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 according to the tourist office. Not marked suitable for an Easter break (owner rule 2026-10-23: the family area, meaning the beginner lifts and the kids-club or ski-school children's area, and its lifts must run through Friday 16 April 2027, the last day of the latest UK Easter school holidays). ESF Auron says only that it works from December to April and gives no 2026/27 end date for its Club Enfants; the Les Marmottes crèche (non-ski care, outside the rule) is listed from 14 December 2026 to 14 April 2027. No 2026/27 end date is published for the family area, so this stays no for now; recheck when the ski school publishes 2026/27 dates. An earlier Easter stay may work.
