Overview

The village and its ski area

Avoriaz is a car-free resort in Haute-Savoie, France, and part of the cross-border Portes du Soleil domain. The official family page describes it as a ski-in/ski-out resort, so many stays let you get from your door to the snow without a car or a bus. Do check the route and the operating pistes for the specific accommodation you are considering, as suitability varies.

The mapped ski area covers 77.8 km of classified downhill runs served by 40 lifts. Those figures are for the ski area rather than the village itself. The mapped terrain runs from 1156 m at its lowest point to 2250 m at its highest, and these are ski-area altitudes, not the altitude of the village.

The terrain suits learners well. Beginner runs make up 81.06% of the mapped classified downhill runs, which is a high share for families with younger children or parents who are new to skiing. The published 2026/27 operating dates run from 11 December 2026 to 18 April 2027.

On cost, our planning tier for Avoriaz is premium. It is based on dated prices for 3 to 4-star apartments for four to seven people. For a family of four (two adults and children aged 6 and 10) staying seven nights from 13 February 2027, the median came to about EUR 124.48 per person per night. That week is also a French school-holiday week, and tourist tax is mostly excluded. Flexible rates were 11 to 14% higher than the non-refundable rates that 12 of the 20 offers were priced at. This is a planning guide, not a quote. For lift passes, an adult one-day Portes du Soleil pass costs EUR 73 at the cash desk (EUR 69 online) between 19 December 2026 and 19 March 2027. The Avoriaz-only day pass is EUR 59 at the cash desk.

Family fit

How it suits a family

For children, Village des Enfants offers supervised skiing and other activities for ages 3 to 16. Age-specific products and advance booking apply, so book early rather than assuming space on the day. ESF Avoriaz runs Club Piou Piou from age 4 in its snow garden. Its 2026/27 booking calendar offers course weeks from 28 November 2026 to the week of 10 to 17 April 2027. English-speaking tuition is available through the ski school, but you should ask for English for your child's age and level group.

For the youngest, the Avrizou day nursery takes children from 6 months to 3 years. Its seasonal dates are shown without a year, so confirm the 2026/27 dates and age eligibility before you book anything. A free lift pass is listed for children under 5. You collect it at the lift ticket desks with proof of age. A mandatory EUR 3 hands-free card applies, and the child must be accompanied by an adult holding a valid pass. Reconfirm the current charges before you travel.

For a rest day, Aquariaz is open Sunday to Friday from 11 December 2026 to 18 April 2027. Children under 12 need an accompanying adult, and you should check current sessions.

Christmas and February half-term are both reasonable shortlist periods within the season, but confirm school dates, weather, lift and service operation, and childcare availability. Easter looks workable too. The children's area is expected to run through Friday 16 April 2027, the last day of the latest UK Easter school holidays, but check live lift status and care dates. The Village des Enfants listing shows only summer dates so far. None of this is a guarantee of snow.

Published 2026/27 operations: Avoriaz 11 December 2026 to 18 April 2027. ESF Avoriaz's Club Piou Piou (from age 4) runs in its snow garden, and the 2026/27 booking calendar offers course weeks from 28 November 2026 to the week of 10 to 17 April 2027, with a Sunday-to-Friday course for the last April week of opening, so the children's area runs through Friday 16 April.
