Overview

The village and its ski area

Ellmau is in Tyrol, Austria, and its skiing is part of the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental ski area. The mapped figures below describe that whole shared area rather than Ellmau alone. It has 223.2 km of classified downhill runs served by 80 lifts.

The ski area runs from 609 m at its lowest mapped point to 1865 m at its highest. These are ski-area figures, not the altitude of the village itself.

For families, the useful number is the beginner share: 49.69% of the mapped classified runs are beginner terrain. That is a sizeable proportion of a large area, which gives children and nervous adults room to build confidence.

On cost, our broad planning estimate puts Ellmau in the mid-range for a trip with mixed apartment and hotel lodging. It is a planning tier, not a quote. School-holiday weeks and your choice of accommodation can change the total, and luxury slope-side hotels sit above it. For lift passes, an adult SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental day ticket costs EUR 79.50 in the 2026/27 main season (19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027). In the early and late season it costs EUR 71.50.

Family fit

How it suits a family

For the youngest children, Ellmi's Kids Club at Hartkaiser offers paid, supervised indoor play and care for ages 2 to 6, separate from ski lessons. Register by the previous afternoon. No infant care is implied. The published schedules still show 2025/26 hours, so reconfirm the 2026/27 dates and conditions before you book.

Ski lessons are available through an English-speaking ski school at Hartkaiser. Its listing explicitly includes English, but confirm staffing and the language group in advance. If you want to cut down on the daily kit shuffle, ski-in/ski-out accommodation is available. One example is Tirol Lodge, which describes skiing from the hotel to Hartkaiser and a piste ending at the property. That supports this specific lodging only.

On lift passes, children born in 2021 or later ride free on the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental individual tariff for winter 2026/27. No adult purchase is required, but confirm the conditions before you rely on it. The child rate covers 2011 to 2020 births. A separate FamilienSkiWochen free offer for older children applies only in named weeks and with a paying adult.

Non-skiers can try winter and snowshoe walks from Ellmau. Guided hotel activities may require a stay, and you should check route conditions.

The published 2026/27 operating dates are 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, including the Ellmau extension. That covers the Christmas and New Year holidays and February half-term. Easter is less certain. The season closes before some April school-holiday dates, so a full Easter break may not fit, though an early Easter could work. Check your school calendar, lift status and childcare dates, because snow is not guaranteed.
