Overview
The village and its ski area
Grindelwald is in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. The Eiger Express and the Männlichen gondola both start at Grindelwald Terminal, so that is where most ski days begin. The mapped ski area is Grindelwald - Wengen (Kleine Scheidegg - Männlichen). It has 85.9 km of classified downhill runs and 27 lifts. Grindelwald-First is a separate area and is not covered here.
The ski area runs from 938 m at its lowest mapped point to 2394 m at its highest. Those are ski-area figures, not the altitude of the village itself. Beginner terrain makes up 40.74% of the mapped classified runs, so there is a fair amount of easy skiing. Families with more confident skiers will want to look at the rest of the run mix too.
Getting to the snow needs a little planning. Eiger Lodge on Grundstrasse says it is right next to the Eiger Express. The operator's piste report lists three valley runs ending at Grindelwald Grund, and those depend on snow. Neither point establishes skiing to your front door, so plan on a short walk, bus or train to the lifts.
On cost, the Jungfrau Ski Region adult day pass for 2026/27 is CHF 79, or CHF 83 on peak dates. Peak dates are 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 and 30 January to 28 February 2027. CHF 83 is about EUR 90.11 at the ECB reference rate of 22 October 2026. A six-day pass is CHF 404 or CHF 424. Together with childcare at CHF 80 a day, this puts Grindelwald in a premium planning tier. That is a guide rather than a quote, because accommodation, holiday week, travel and meals can all move the real cost of a trip.

Family fit
How it suits a family
For younger children, OUTDOOR runs a Kids' Club at the Bodmi Arena in Grindelwald village. It offers staffed small-group care from Monday to Friday for nappy-free children from age 3. The programme includes indoor and outdoor play, crafts, snow play and a warm lunch. Book ahead. The club is in the village, not up on the Männlichen. Care runs for 1 to 6 hours between 10:00 and 16:00, from December to April. It costs CHF 20 for supervised lunch, CHF 60 for an afternoon with lunch or CHF 80 for a full day. No infant care is established.
There is an English-speaking ski school option. OUTDOOR says its guides speak German and English. Its Männlichen beginner lesson is for ages 12 and over, in groups of 3 to 8, meeting at Grindelwald Terminal. It runs daily from December to April. English teaching for younger children was not separately confirmed, so ask before booking. On lift passes, the Jungfrau Ski Region's child category starts at age 6, and no free rule is stated for younger children. On Saturdays, up to three children aged 6 to 15 get a free day ticket when an adult buys a list-price day or afternoon ticket. That is a promotion, not an everyday age threshold.
Non-skiers and tired legs have options. The Jungfrau Railways list the Eiger Run, the Männlichen–Holenstein run and the Fox Run for sledging in the Grindelwald-Wengen area. They sell a Winter Hiking and Sledging Pass valid from 21 November 2026 to 25 April 2027. The runs differ in difficulty, so check openings and age suitability.
For school holidays, the published 2026/27 operations are as follows. Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg and Eigergletscher run from 21 November 2026 to 25 April 2027. Grindelwald, Holenstein and Männlichen run from 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. Christmas and New Year fall within that season. So do the February half-term planning weeks starting 8, 15 and 22 February. Easter is not marked as suitable. Grindelwald's own slopes close on 4 April. The Eiger Express still reaches the higher Kleine Scheidegg and Eigergletscher sector, but the runs back to the village are closed. Check your school calendar, live lift status and care dates, as snow cannot be guaranteed.

8Price tier22 Oct 2026
Premium planning tier. Basis (owner decision 2026-10-22): official dated ski prices only; no lodging price was sampled. The batch rule compares the dated adult peak day pass with the EUR 69 premium-season day pass behind the existing mid tier for Jerzens (Hochzeiger), using the matcher's tier factors: at or below 0.8 times is budget only when dated school or childcare prices agree, at or above 1.3 times is premium, otherwise mid; luxury needs lodging evidence. The Jungfrau Ski Region 2026/27 adult day pass costs CHF 79, or CHF 83 on peak dates (19 December 2026–3 January 2027 and 30 January–28 February 2027); six days CHF 404/424. At the ECB reference rate of 0.9211 CHF per euro on 22 October 2026, CHF 83 is EUR 90.11, about 1.31 times the reference, just above the premium threshold. OUTDOOR childcare costs CHF 80 a day. The seven existing Swiss villages are premium or luxury. Accommodation, holiday week, travel and meals can move a real trip into another tier; this is a planning tier, not a quote.
